Jambongan Island

Pulau Jambongan (English Jambongan Iceland ), sometimes called Pulau Jembongan, is about Sabah, Malaysia owned island in the Sulu Sea. It forms the eastern boundary of the Paitan Bay and the northern boundary of the Schomburgk Bay.

Pulau Jambongan is one of the largest islands of Sabah. In the southeast of the U- shaped island lies the small town Jambongan (also called Jembongan ). The island is 20 kilometers long and 14 kilometers wide at its greatest extent. The island is separated from the mainland by an approximately 4 -kilometer-wide water surface.

The east side of the island is fringed by mangrove forests. In the near Tanjong landing Hayang, the north-eastern point of the island, the shore is formed as a cliff with a height of 52 m. To the south of the island lies the estuary of the Sungai Paitan. The north coast between Tanjong landing Taroh and Tanjong Buli Gantungan (North West Cliff ) drops 6 to 15 m down to the sea from.

Between the 156 m high Tanjong Buli Gantungan (North West Cliff, 6 ° 44 ' N., 117 ° 23' E. ) and ten kilometers away, and 140m southwest cliff is a narrow bay which extends almost five kilometers southeasterly direction. The entrance to the bay is about three miles wide with a water depth of at least 3.7 m. The coastline of the bay is forested.

Use

The island is heavily wooded. Parts of the island are used for forestry. A part of the forest was provided by the Ministry of Forestry under protection. The already settled on the island of palm oil industry ( Asiatic Jambongan Estate Jambongan Iceland ) was placed under surveillance to prevent harmful influences on forests or mitigate. Illegal logging on Jambongan Iceland represents the Ministry of Forestry remains a serious problem that is encountered with raids and the seizure of large forestry machines.

History

In the Mat- Salleh Rebellion in 1894, the island was the scene of a murder of two members of the tribe of the Iban, for the Paduka Mat Salleh was the chief blamed. Captain Barnett and Barraut, later the district officer of Kudat, were directed to seize Salleh in Jambongan, but were unsuccessful.
