James Avery (actor)

James La Rue Avery, Sr. ( born November 27, 1945 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, † December 31, 2013 in Glendale, California ) was an American actor who The mainly through the role of Philip Banks on the sitcom Fresh Prince of Bel - Air has been known.

Career

James Avery came shortly after his high school years in the U.S. Navy and served from 1968 to 1969 in Vietnam. He then moved to San Diego and was an author at station PBS. There, he won an Emmy Award for one of his works and studied on a scholarship at the University of California at San Diego, where he earned his bachelor's degree in the arts subjects drama and literature.

Because of its popularity in various sitcoms, he was often used as a voice actor in animated series, including as the voice of The Shredder from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. From 1990 to 1996 he played the role of Philip Banks in the series The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, for which he was elected in a television poll in the list of the 50 best TV dads of all time. Overall, he was involved in more than 170 film and television productions.

James Avery died on 31 December 2013 after complications from heart surgery. He left behind his wife and a stepson.
