James Boyd (Boxer)

James Felton "Jim" Boyd ( born November 30, 1930 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, † January 25, 1997 in Baltimore, Maryland ) was an American boxer in the heavyweight ( 75-81 kg).

Boxing career

James Boyd entered 1947 in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Benning, where he began with the boxes. 1955 and 1956 he was All- Army and All- Service Champion and won the 1956 National Golden Gloves, where he defeated in the finals Ernie Terrell.

In the 16th Summer Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956, he won the gold medal. He defeated it in the quarterfinals of Argentine Rodolfo Luciano Díaz, in the semifinals Romualdas Murauskas from the Soviet Union and in the final of the Romanians Gheorghe Negrea.

In 1959 he became a professional boxer and denied until September 1962 seven bouts, including two wins and three draws. He died in 1997 from the effects of cancer.
