James Whelan (bishop)

James Whelan OP ( born June 8 ( uncertain ) 1823 in Scaehan, County Kilkenny, Ireland, † February 18, 1878 in Zanesville, Ohio, USA) was Bishop of Nashville.

Life

James Whelan joined the Congregation of the Dominican and put on 29 June 1840, the perpetual profession from. He received on August 2, 1846 Sacrament of Holy Orders.

On January 28, 1859, he was named by Pope Pius IX. Titular Bishop of Marco Polis and appointed him as Coadjutor Bishop of Nashville. The Archbishop of Saint Louis, Peter Richard Kenrick, donated to him on 8 May of the same year the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were the Vicar Apostolic of Kansas, John Baptiste Miege, SJ, and the Bishop of Alton, Henry Damian Juncker. On 21 February 1860, James Whelan in succession to the late Richard Pius Miles Bishop of Nashville.

On September 23, 1863 James Whelan resigned as Bishop of Nashville and Pope Pius IX. appointed him on 12 February 1864, Titular Bishop of Diocletianopolis in Palestine.
