János Csernoch

János Cardinal Csernoch ( Hungarian) [ja ː noʃ ʧɛrnox ] or Ján Cardinal Černoch ( Slovak) ( born June 18, 1852 in Skalica ( Skalitz ), Kingdom of Hungary ( today Slovakia); † July 25, 1927 in Esztergom ( Gran dt ) ) was archbishop of Esztergom.

Life

Černoch studied in Vienna and Rome, the subjects of philosophy and Catholic theology. He earned his doctorate in Catholic theology and received on 18 November 1874 in Vienna, the ordination. After further studies, he worked as a pastor, high school teacher, librarian, archivist and notary of the Apostolic See in Radošovce (German Radoschotz, Hungarian Radosócz ) and Esztergom. In 1888 he received the appointment as Titularabt of Savnyik, 1901, he represented his birthplace in the Hungarian Parliament.

Černoch was co-founder of the Catholic Party of Hungary, in the beginning he represented the Slovak Catholicism (but after 1918 he was a supporter of Hungarian interests ).

In 1907, he was Apostolic prothonotary. In 1908 he was appointed by Pope Pius X. Bishop of Csanád. He received his episcopal consecration on May 10, 1908, the bishop of Veszprém and later Cardinal, Károly Hornig.

The Pope appointed Černoch 1911 Archbishop of Kalocsa diocese and in 1912 Archbishop of Esztergom.

On May 25, 1914 János Csernoch was taken as cardinal priest with the titular church Sant'Eusebio in the College of Cardinals. He took in the years 1914 and 1922 part of the conclave, on 31 December 1916, he crowned Charles IV of Hungary.

János Csernoch died on 25 July 1927 in Esztergom and was buried in the local cathedral.
