Jean-Baptiste Regnault

Baron Jean -Baptiste Regnault (* October 17, 1754 in Paris, † October 12, 1829 ) was a French painter of classicism.

Life

The early gifted Regnault was still a child when he succeeded his father to America, where he hired as a cabin boy in the Navy in 1765 and went to 1769 to the lake.

He was returned to Paris pupil of the painter Jean Bardin (* 1732 † 1809), with whom he was staying in Rome 1770-1775. There he inspired the nascent classicism. 1776, he was awarded a year after a few years older Jacques -Louis David, also a student Bardins, the Prix de Rome for " Diogenius and Alexander".

Admission to the Academy took place in 1783 with the painting L' Éducation d' Achille par le centaure Chiron ( The Education of Achilles ) the result of the balance of the composition and of forms, style purity and the quality of the colors in addition to 1789 in the academic tradition for the chapel of Fontainebleau created " Cross" as one of his best works is true.

The " Cross" was one of the few religious works of the artist. He chose preferred mythological, allegorical and historical subjects.

His enthusiasm for the revolution was Regnault in 1795 in the book " Freedom or Death " phrase, an allusion to the motto of the Convention. In 1804 he was awarded the contract for the work " Napoleon's Triumphal March ", which certain of the emperor for the Senate, but today is in Versailles.

The late work is characterized by sensual mythological motifs in the style of Boudoirmalerei of the 18th century.

Jean -Baptiste Regnault died on 12 October 1829 in Paris at the age of 74 years.

Influence

Regnault belonged to the generation of Jacques -Louis David, with his strong personality, he could hardly compete as a teacher at the Académie Royale. Among his pupils were, among others, Gabriel -Christophe Guérin, Louis Hersent, Michel Delaporte, Auguste Couder and Robert Lefèvre. He also influenced Claude- Félix- Théodore Aligny.
