Jean Isidore Harispe

Jean Isidore Harispe ( born December 7, 1768 in Saint- Étienne -de- Baïgorry, † May 26 1855 in Lacarre ) was a French general of Basque origin.

Life

Harispe comes from a wealthy family of landowners. With the Revolution of 1789 was the wishes of his father - Jean Isidore was to become a priest - not met. With 24 years Harispe joined the army in 1792 and acted already in the following year as an officer in Saint -Jean -Pied -de-Port.

He took part in the fighting in Spain and returned 1795/96 back to France. In 1799 he fought under the command of General James McDonald in the Grisons, and later transferred to the Army of Italy, under Generals Bon -Adrien Jeannot de - Moncey and Guillaume -Marie- Anne Brune.

When the third coalition war broke out, Harispe served under Marshal Charles Pierre François Augereau and fought 1805/ 06 together with Jacques Desjardin. In the Battle of Jena and Auerstedt (14 October 1806), he was wounded and for that in January 1897 promoted to brigadier general. As such, he came to the staff of General Nicolas Jean -de- Dieu Soult and served, among other things together with Jean -Antoine Verdier.

Harispe distinguished himself by his bravery in Guttstadt ( 5/6 June 1807), Heilenberg (10 June 1807) and Friedland (14 June 1807). In Friedland he was wounded, but was able to take up his duties as chief of staff of Marshal Moncey in December of the same year. As such, he helped enforce the Napoleonic interests in Spain.

Under command of Marshal Jean Lannes fought Harispe in the battle of Tudela and took 1808/ 09 participated in the siege of Saragossa. As the fifth coalition war broke out, Lannes returned to France and Harispe was chief of staff of General Louis Gabriel Suchet.

In the Battle of María de Huerva (15 July 1809) Harispe was severely wounded. His first battle after his recovery was the Battle of Lleida (29 April 1810). At the siege of Tarragona ( 1811/Januar November 1812) he was able to turn distinguished by bravery.

After working in Valencia and Castalla Harispe took part in the Battle of Vitoria (June 21, 1813). In the retreat of his army had Harispe your castle in his hometown burn down so as not to have to leave the British troops under Field Marshal Wellington.

When Napoleon had already abdicated Harispe still fought at Toulouse and lost a leg by a cannonball.

During the Restoration to Harispe had joined the Bourbons. When Napoleon but the island of Elba left and the " rule of the Hundred Days " began, announced Harispe King Louis XVIII. allegiance and joined again to the Emperor.

After the battle of Waterloo itself Harispe moved into his now reconstructed castle and remained there until the July Revolution of 1830. A proponent of the July Monarchy, he supported King Louis- Philippe I and was rewarded in 1831 with the office of Member for Basses- Pyrénées. During the Second Empire, one then also appointed him to the Senate.

At the age of 86 years, Jean Isidore Harispe died on 26 May 1855 in Lacarre and found his final resting place.
