The Jiu ( German Shield or squint; Hungarian Zsil; Latin Rabon ) is a left tributary of the Danube in the south of Romania.

The river is formed near Petrosani from the Jiul de Vest (German Western Shield ) and the Jiul de Est ( Eastern German Shield ). The Jiul de Vest arises between Retezat and Valcan Mountains, the Jiul de Est on the border of Parang and Sureanu Mountains. After the unification, it flows predominantly to the south by the circles Hunedoara, Gorj and Dolj, before flowing into the Wallachian Plain and the Danube.
