John Baker (bishop)

John Austin Baker ( born January 11, 1928 in Birmingham ) is a British Anglican theologian and university lecturer. He was from 1982 to 1993 Bishop of Salisbury in the Church of England.

Baker was born the son of George Austin Baker and his wife Grace Edna Baker. He attended Marlborough College. He studied at Oriel College, University of Oxford. In preparation for the priesthood, he studied theology at Ripon Theological College, Cuddesdon near Oxford. In 1954 he was ordained a deacon; In 1955 the priest. His priestly career began as a vicar ( Curate ) on the All Saint's in Cuddesdon and at St Anselm 's Church in Hatch End. From 1959 to 1973 he was a Fellow, Chaplain ( Chaplain ) and lecturer ( Lecturer ) at Corpus Christi College, University of Oxford. He was also a lecturer and professor at Brasenose College and Lincoln College, University of Oxford. In 1967 he was a visiting professor at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.

From 1973, he was up to his elevation to bishop Residenzkanoniker ( Residential Canon, Canon ) at Westminster Abbey. From 1974 to 1975 he was a visiting professor ( visiting professor ) at King's College London, University of London. From 1978 to 1982 he was sub- decene (Sub - Dean ) and " Lector Theologiae " at Westminster Abbey. At the same time he was pastor ( rector ) at St Margaret 's Church in Westminster. He was also at this time Chaplain ( Chaplain ) of the Speakers of the House of Commons.

In 1982 he was ordained a bishop. In 1982, he was, as the successor of George Reindorp, Bishop of Salisbury in the Church of England. In 1993, he went into retirement. His successor as Bishop of Salisbury, David Stancliffe. After his retirement he has been active since 1994 as a volunteer auxiliary bishop ( Honorary Assistant Bishop) in the diocese of Winchester.

Baker was from 1967 to 1981 and again from 1984 to 1987 member of the Doctrine Commission of the Church of England; 1985-1987 he was the Chairman ( Chairman ). He was from 1983 to 1987 a member of the Standing Committee of the General Synod of the Church of England and the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches.

Baker was in his capacity as Bishop of Salisbury from 1986 until his retirement as Bishop of Salisbury in 1993 as minister Lord the House of Lords on.

Baker has written several books on religious and canonical issues. He wrote, inter alia, the BücherThe Foolishness of God ( 1970), Prophecy in the Church (1976) and The Whole Family of God ( 1981).

Baker is married. In 1974 he married his wife Gillian Mary Leach ( MBE). His hobbies include traveling and music.
