John Galsworthy

John Galsworthy ( born August 14, 1867 in Kingston Hill, Surrey, England; † January 31, 1933 in London ) was an English novelist and playwright. His novel series The Forsyte Saga is considered a classic of modern English literature. 1932 Galsworthy was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Life

As the son of wealthy parents Galsworthy visited a well-known private school in Harrow. He studied at New College, Oxford University law and became a barrister in 1890. But he showed little interest in the legal profession and instead went to the lake, where he met the Polish writer Joseph Conrad, who sparked his interest in literature. His first works published under the pseudonym of John Galsworthy Sinjohn.

Galsworthy's first play The Silver Box was listed in 1906 with success. In the same year he wrote the novel The Man of Property, the first part of the successful series The Forsyte Saga. In 1921 he became the first president of the international association of writers PEN He died in 1933 from the effects of a brain tumor.

Artistic creation

Galsworthy's best-known works are still the novel series The Forsyte Saga and its sequels A Modern Comedy and End Of The Chapter.

Many of his works contain criticism of the social situation, especially on the British class system. In many novels and plays, he criticized - often through ironic portrayal of the haute bourgeoisie and nobility - the materialism of the upper class. Another recurring motif is the representation of unhappily married women.

Galsworthy's novels are characterized by vivid characters, purity of style, clever dialogue management and good readability.

Sigmund Freud writes about the short story The Apple Tree in 1930 in Chapter IV of the unease in the culture in a footnote: "Among the seals of the subtle Englishman J. Galsworthy, who now general recognition delighted I appreciated early on a short story, titled: ' the Apple Tree '. shows you in striking ways, as in the life of today's culture people for the simple, natural love of two children of men no more room.
