John Harrington (ice hockey)

John Michael " Bah " Harrington ( born May 24, 1957 in Virginia, Minnesota ) is a retired American professional ice hockey player who works as a trainer since 1984. Most recently, he was standing by the HC Asiago of the Italian Serie A1 and the Slovenian national ice hockey team under contract.

Career

As a player

John Harrington was an outstanding hockey player of the Virginia High School in the state of Minnesota played. After a season in leading Virginia urged Mike Sertich, assistant coach of the University of Minnesota Duluth, Harrington to join the hockey team of the University. He remained there from 1975 to 1979 and was with Sertichs help to become a leading player of the team.

After his performance in the university team in 1979 he was invited to the U.S. national team, which was coached at the time by Herb Brooks. In 1980 he was nominated for the Olympic Winter Games. The U.S. beat in the final round the heavily favored team from the USSR 4-3. The game went as the so-called " Miracle on Ice" in history. Two days later, they fought in the second game of the final round Finland 4-2 and thus won the gold medal. In the game against the USSR played the Harrington Assist to Mike Eruzione, who scored the winning goal in order.

For a short time Harrington was active in the Buffalo Sabres in the National Hockey League, but quickly changed to the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League, where he scored seven points in twelve games. In a game against the Hershey Bears Harrington was attacked by Lou Franceschetti. He lost consciousness for five minutes and had the night with a concussion, a broken jaw and a broken nose and four lost teeth spend in the hospital. From 1980 Harrington played for one year in the HC Lugano in Switzerland, before he returned to the U.S. to play again for the U.S. National Team. With this he took in 1981, 1982 and 1983 at the World Ice Hockey Championships in part. Between short phases of work in the Central Hockey League, he participated in Sarajevo at the 1984 Winter Olympics.

As a coach and other career

1984 Harrington ended his active career as a player and worked at the University of Denver as an assistant coach Ralph Backstrom, a former player of the Montreal Canadiens. The highlight of Harrington's work in Denver were the years 1985 and 1986, where the hockey team after 34 games won in the ranks of the NCAA Frozen Four, in the semi-finals a season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, pushed forward four participants. 1990 Harrington returned to Minnesota, where he worked as an assistant coach for the St. Cloud State University.

From 1993 to 2008 Harrington was the head coach at Saint John's University in Minnesota. In 15 seasons, he set a record five times and won the title of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

On 31 March 2008 it was announced that Harrington will resign from his position as coach at Saint John's University to accept a coaching position at HC Ambri -Piotta from the Swiss National League A. There he but was dismissed on 16 December 2008.

January 19, 2009 Harrington signed a contract as head coach of the Slovenian national team on 11 May 2009, he was hired at the HC Asiago, also as a coach. In December 2010, the American was dismissed by the Slovenian Association and replaced by Matjaž Kopitar. About a month later, Harrington was replaced at HC Asiago by John Tucker at the gang. For the 2011/12 season he was engaged the Colorado Avalanche in the function as a scout.

As a member of the Olympic team of the year 1980, Harrington was by Nate Miller in the film Miracle - presented The Miracle of Lake Placid, who also played from 1997 to 2000 at the University of Minnesota Hockey.

Family

Harrington is married and has three children. He is the father of Chris Harrington, who is also professional hockey player.

Nickname " Bah "

In his family, friends and acquaintances from high school Harrington is known by the nickname " Bah ". He received this name from his brother, who was just a year old when John was born. At this age, the brother had trouble pronouncing the word " baby " right and instead said " Bah ".
