John Hunter (Royal Navy officer)

John Hunter ( born August 29, 1737 Leith, Edinburgh, † March 13, 1821 in London) was a Scottish pioneer and Australia 1795-1800 Governor of New South Wales.

Hunter came in 1787 with the First Fleet as second captain of the HMS Sirius to Australia. He brought convicts to Norfolk Island in 1790 and was there after a shipwreck near starvation. On the return trip with the Waaksamheyd were long ago discovered island groups ( Steward and Lord Howe Island ) happened and explores the Duke of York Island closer. As governor he promoted the expeditions of George Bass and Matthew Flinders.
