John N. Hungerford

John Hungerford Newton ( born December 31, 1825 in Oneida County, New York, † April 2, 1883 in Corning, New York ) was an American politician. Between 1877 and 1879 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Hungerford attended the public schools of his home. In 1846 he graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton. Initially he worked in the trade. Since 1848 he lived in Corning in Steuben County, where he began a long career in the banking industry. He rose to the bank president. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. In June 1872 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia in part, was nominated to the President Ulysses S. Grant for re-election. In his home Hungerford held various local offices. He also made a name as a philanthropist.

In the congressional elections of 1876 Hungerford was the 29th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded the Democrats Charles CB Walker on March 4, 1877. Until March 3, 1879, he was able to complete a term in Congress. After his time in the U.S. House of Representatives sat Hungerford his activity in the banking sector continued. He died on April 2, 1883 in Corning.
