John Pritchard (bishop)

John Lawrence Pritchard ( born April 22, 1948 in Salford ) is a British Anglican theologian and Bishop of Oxford since 2007 in the Church of England.

Life

Pritchard was born the son of a clergyman; a church career, however, was not intended first in his family for him. He attended Arnold School in Blackpool and initially studied law at St Peter's College, Oxford University. During the summer holidays, he worked as a streetcar conductor in Blackpool. After graduating ( First Degree ) in Law, he studied at Oxford and then theology.

In preparation for the priesthood, he attended the Ridley Hall College, University of Cambridge, where he earned a degree in Pastoral Theology. He was ordained a priest in 1972. He was parochial vicar from 1972 to 1976 ( Curate ) in the parish of St Martin 's in the Bull Ring in Birmingham. In 1976 he was chaplain, youth minister and deputy manager for the religious instruction ( Assistant Director of Religious Education ) in the diocese of Bath and Wells. In 1980 he became pastor (Vicar ) of Wilton in the municipality of Taunton; he held until 1988 this church office. In 1988 he became director of Pastoral ( Director of Pastoral Studies) at Cranmer Hall Anglican Theological College, the seminary of St John's College, University of Durham; 1993-1996 he was there Seminar Head ( Warden ). During his time at the University of Durham Pritchard earned a Master of Letters in specialized pastoral theology. From 1996 to 2001 he was Archdeacon ( Archdeacon ) and Residenzkanoniker ( Canon residentiary ) at the Cathedral of Canterbury.

In July 2001, his appointment as Suffragan Bishop of Jarrow was announced. In January 2002 he was ordained a bishop. In December 2006 he was appointed Bishop of Oxford. On 8 June 2007 he was officially introduced at the Cathedral of Oxford in his office. He is the 42nd Bishop of Oxford.

2008 Pritchard supported as Bishop of Oxford the desire of Muslim believers after a transfer of the adhaan over loudspeakers from the minaret of the main mosque ( Central Mosque ) in Oxford. Pritchard subsequently received several death threats conservative Christian circles that demanded his beheading among others.

Pritchard held various other clerical tasks and honorary positions. From 1999 to 2001 he was a member of the General Synod of the Church of England; he is there since 2007 to re-join. He is since 2005 member of the board of the evangelistic organization Church Army. Since 2005 he has been president of the organization Guild of Health. Since 2008 he is member of the Ministry Division of the Church of England. Since 2009 he is a trustee ( Trustee ) of the Christian Missions Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge ( SPCK ).

Since 2007 he is an Honorary Fellow of St Peter's College, Oxford University.

Membership in the House of Lords

Pritchard heard since 2010 as a clergyman Lord the House of Lords. Its official launch took place on November 25, 2010. He was assisted in this task by Martin Wharton, Bishop of Newcastle and John Saxbee, the Bishop of Lincoln. It occurs in the House of Lords in the footsteps of David Stancliffe, who was until 2010 the Bishop of Salisbury.

Private

Pritchard is married and the father of two daughters. His wife, Wendy worked for many years as a mathematics teacher and most recently served as assistant teacher ( Learning Support Assistant) to the Venerable Bede School in Sunderland worked. His hobbies include hiking it, photography, reading, writing books, traveling, music and cricket.
