John Warburton Paul

Sir John Warburton Paul, GCMG (* March 29, 1916, † 31 March 2004) was a British governor and represented Queen Elizabeth II in the British colonies Gambia, Bahamas and British Honduras, as well as Lieutenant Governor on the Isle of Man.

Life

John Warburton Paul was a governor, who was known for his more than 20 years working in the British overseas territories. He probably had the greatest impact on the independence of the Gambia and the Bahamas, which he ruled in each case as the last governor.

Paul studied at the University of Cambridge. As of March 29, 1962, he held the office of governor in Gambia until this on February 18, 1965 declared its independence. Then he was up in February 1966 for a year first Governor-General of The Gambia. His successor was the Gambier Sir Farimang Singhateh. Then Paul went to British Honduras (now Belize), where he served as governor from 1972.

Paul then moved to the Bahamas and worked there for a year. He served as governor until the country became independent on 10 July 1973. He acted more as Governor General by the end of this month.

Finally, Paul served as Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man 1974-1980. He went into retirement.

Paul married in 1946 Audrey Kathleen Weeden, with whom he had three daughters. She died in December 2004, a few months after her husband.
