Johnny Spillane

John "Johnny" Spillane (* November 24, 1980 in Steamboat Springs ) is an American nordic combined, but also repeatedly took at unterklassigen competitions in ski jumping.

Career

Nordic Combined

Spillane started in 1990 with the skiing at the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. Before long, he started in national competitions. In 1995 he was admitted to the B national squad and competed in the 1995/96 season for the first time in B- World Cup Nordic Combined. In the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 1999, he won jointly with Carl Van Loan, Jed Hinkley and Bill Demong the gold medal in the team competition. Then he managed to jump into the national squad and traveled two weeks later as a team member for the 1999 Nordic World Ski Championships in Ramsau am Dachstein. With a ranking of 32 in singles and 37th in the sprint, he remained in the individual disciplines without success. Even with the team he did not get beyond rank 10.

At the end of the 1998/99 season Spillane succeeded in B- World Cup in Klingenthal a victory and a third place. In the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2000 in Štrbské Pleso, he won the team silver. On December 2, 2000 in Kuopio Spillane gave his debut in the World Cup Nordic Combined. A day later, Rank 22 he succeeded in the mass start for the first time, a result in the World Cup points ranking. In the B- World Cup a few days later he managed another victory in Salt Lake City. Back in the World Cup he won in Reit im Winkl again World Cup points.

For the Nordic World Ski Championships 2001 in Lahti, he missed again a top ranking. At season's end he missed the World Cup in Oslo his first top- 10 ranking as 12th just barely. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, he missed with the team in the team competition in fourth barely a medal. In the two individual disciplines he ever reached the 32nd place.

In the Summer Grand Prix 2002 Spillane enter Winterberg and Berchtesgaden first time two top - 10 finishes in an A - class racing. In the 2002/ 03 season, he raced successfully with a 10th place in Kuusamo. Surprisingly, it was Spillane little later reached in Trondheim three podiums, including two third and a second place. In Harrachov he missed another podium finish in fourth just barely.

In the Nordic World Ski Championships 2003 in Val di Fiemme in the sprint he succeeded in winning the gold medal and thus his first individual World Champion title. It was in the course of his career, the only world championship medal, which he won. With the team, he missed another medal in fifth. In the World Cup he also get more good results, so that he finally finished his most successful season in seventh place overall.

As a result, he managed to tie difficult on this success. Although Spillane reached the top 10 a few times, but could not there place firmly. Mostly he missed even the points. In the Summer Grand Prix 2004, he reached after a victory in Oberstdorf at the end of the third place in the overall standings.

Also in the Nordic World Ski Championships 2005 in Oberstdorf Spillane remained without top score and medal. Also in the 2005/ 06 season he started with only one point success in Oberhof. Despite the lack of success he went again at the Olympic Winter Games in 2006 at the start. With a ranking of 10 in a sprint he proved it once again old strength. With the team and also in the individual Gundersen he missed the top ranks significantly.

In the 2006/07 season Spillane started again with a top -10 ranking in Lillehammer. However, it took until November 2007 in Kuusamo, where Spillane in the sprint in second again after many years celebrated a podium finish. After it true, his only podium of the season, remained Spillane but also further gains could celebrate good points, he finished the season in 19th place in the Top 20 overall. Once again a strong performance proved Spillane in the season 2009/10. On January 3, 2010, he with the victory in Oberhof scored his first and only World Cup victory.

At the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver in 2010 the American won the silver medal in the normal hill Gundersen. It was also the first U.S. Olympic medal in Nordic Combined in the history of the Olympic Games. A few days later Spillane won jointly with Brett Camerota, Todd Lodwick and Bill Demong also the silver medal in the team competition and two days later he won the individual competition on the large hill about 10 km his third silver medal. The World Cup season, he finished a little later in ninth place overall.

Once, however, he subsequently mostly over jumped to the success of ranks and ran Spillane ended finally after an unsuccessful start at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Val di Fiemme his active career.

Ski Jumping

In Ski Jumping approached at four Continental Cup competitions. On September 28, 2002, he was able to achieve fifth place in Park City. The next day he was even able to take second place. The next year he joined back in to the competition in Park City, but missed with the places 36 and 33 in both jumping the second round. In 2004, he joined again in Park City, but here in two FIS competitions, where he places three and four occupied. In the two FIS Jumping exclusively Springer competed in the USA and Canada.

Spillane won the 2003 in Steamboat Springs and 2008 in Salt Lake City, the U.S. champion in ski jumping.

Already in 2013 acquired Spillane in his home in Steamboat Springs by Tim Kirkpatrick a store for fly fishing.
