José María Zárraga

José María Martín Zárraga ( born August 15, 1930 in Getxo, † April 3, 2012 in Madrid) was a Spanish football player, coach and official.

Career

Zárraga began his career with his hometown club Arenas de Getxo, a historically significant club, who won the 1919 Copa del Rey. In 1949 he was discovered by an emissary of Real Madrid, who hired the then 18 -year-old Basque for the second team of the club, AD Plus Ultra. In the youth team of the capital city Zárraga remained for two years before the right-sided midfielder by coach Héctor Scarone was brought in the first squad. With Real Madrid, he enjoyed great success as winning six league titles and five European Cups as national champion and a World Cup. Since 1958 Zárraga was also captain of Real Madrid.

Official and coach

As a coach Zárraga worked a season at Real Murcia and two more seasons at FC Malaga, before he moved into management in the latter. As an official, he worked for six years and moved to the function as sporting director after two years in the FC Valencia. His greatest successes came at Deportivo Alavés, where among other things he negotiated the transfer of Andoni Zubizarreta López Rekarte, or Jorge Valdano Juanjo.
