Joseph Millard

Joseph Hopkins Millard ( born April 20, 1836 in Hamilton, Ontario, † January 13, 1922 in Omaha ) was a banker and in the period 1901-1907 U.S. Senator for the State of Nebraska.

Early years

Joseph Hopkins Millard retired early with his parents to Sabula in the U.S. state of Iowa. There he attended school and began to work initially in a store. At the age of 20 he moved to Omaha and got into the real estate business. In 1864 he moved to Virginia City, Montana, where he opened a bank. However, two years later, he moved back to Omaha, where he became the director of the Bank Omaha National Bank ( until 1920 ). In 1869 he was one of the founders of the Omaha & Northwestern Railroad. In 1872 he was elected mayor of the city. For thirteen years he was an official of the Union Pacific Railroad Company.

Political rise

As a Republican, Millard moved on March 28th, 1901 late in the Senate after the Republicans in Nebraska Legislature could not agree on candidates. His term ended on March 3, 1907. He was chairman of the Committee on Inter- Oceanic Canals in the 59th Congress. For re-election, he was not nominated.

Evening of life and death

Here he took up his banking business in Omaha again, where he died on January 13, 1922 from the effects of heart disease.
