Joyce DiDonato
Joyce DiDonato ( born February 13, 1969 in Prairie Village, Kansas ) is an American singer in the vocal range mezzo- soprano. It is regarded as one of the great mezzo- sopranos of her time. Her repertoire ranges from Handel and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on the bel canto operas of the early 19th century up to Richard Strauss.
Life and artistic work
Joyce DiDonato (born Flaherty ) was Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri, as the sixth of seven children of an Irish- American family was born in Prairie Village. In high school she sang in the choir and dreamed of becoming a pop singer or Broadway star. She studied among others Singing at the Wichita State University and graduated from the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia. Her first engagement was at the Santa Fe Opera. There she first sang minor roles or understudy in opera and operetta. 1994 had the mezzo -soprano in the world premiere of David Lang's Modern Painters. In the season 1998/1999 she was the Angelina in the opera La Cenerentola her Scala debut. At the Salzburg Festival she sang Adalgisa in Norma 2010. 2013, it was in the Last Night of the Proms, inter alia, the songs Danny Boy and Rule, Britannia! before.
Meanwhile, the artist sings on all the great opera stages of the world. She has performed, among others in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Chicago, Geneva, Hamburg, London, Madrid, Milan, Munich, New York, Paris, San Francisco and Vienna.
