Judi Silvano

Judi Silvano ( b. 1951 in Philadelphia ) is an American jazz singer, composer and dancer.

Life and work

Silvano studied flute, piano, ballet and modern dance before she attended Temple University. After a European tour they had in 1976 settled in New York City. She is a student of Jeanne Lee and Sheila Jordan. In 1980, she met Joe Lovano. Together they founded the The Windance Ensemble, with whom she gave a series of music and dance concerts in the Washington Square Church; among others had Kenny Werner, Bill Frisell, Joey Baron and Billy Drewes with. In addition, it was at this time workshops for music and movement at the New School for Social Research.

In 1981, she played with Michael Bocian and Kenny Werner a their first album (For this poison). In 1987 she founded the label with Lovano JSL Records. After a European tour with Lovano Wind Ensemble ( with Bill Frisell, Tim Hagans and Paul Motian ) she founded in 1990 her first vocal group Voices of Juniper with which they first prize at the Brooklyn Lager band search for their arrangement of pieces of Ellington, Monk, Haden and Harrell and his own compositions won. In 1992, with Dancing Voices released their first album as a band leader.

In the following period incurred more solo albums and albums in collaboration with Lovano. Since 1997 she has taught voice at Rutgers University; in the following year she participated in the Banff International Centre for the Arts ' Summer Jazz Workshop; also as a result she gave courses and workshops.

2000 undertook Silvano their first European tour as a band leader, being in Brussels grossed an album with Mal Waldron. In 2001 she worked with the Muhlenberg College Dancers and choreographer Susan Creitz with the project Travellin ' Without A Clue and worked with guitarist James Emery. In 2002 she founded her second vocal ensemble Voices Together. With Waldron In November 2002, she recorded the album Riding a Zephyr. She went with Leanne Averbach and with Golda Solomon to jazz and poetry concerts and worked with musicians like Dena DeRose and Scott Lee and pianist Russ Lossing and participated in Bob Meyers project Sephardic Meets Jazz ( with Brad Shepik, John Menegon and Loren Stillman ). With Adam Kolker, Ben Allison and Gerry Hemingway, she founded the new quartet Cleome.
