K. R. Narayanan

KR Narayanan ( Kocheril Raman Narayanan; malayalam: .. കെ ആര് നാരായണന്; born October 27, 1920 in Uzhavoor, Kerala, † November 9, 2005 in New Delhi ) was an Indian politician and the President of India from 1997 to 2002.

Life

Even during the British colonial period, he became a teacher, then a journalist, and he received a scholarship at the prestigious London School of Economics. From there, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru brought him into the foreign service, for which he worked among other things as ambassador in Beijing and Washington.

The mid-1980s, he moved into politics. He was Member of Parliament, then ministers. In 1992 he was promoted to Vice President and was elected President of India in 1997. The official proclamation was made on 17 July 1997, on 25 July he took office. With him for the first time took a Dalit, a member of an untouchable caste, the highest office in the state. He exercised the office by July 2002, and campaigned for the abolition of the 3500 years old Indian caste system. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam became his successor on 18 July 2002.
