Zail Singh

Giani Zail Singh ( born May 5, 1916 in Sandhwan, Punjab, † December 25, 1994, Chandigarh ) was an Indian state president of 1982 until 1987.

The religious community of Sikhs belonging to former freedom fighter and later politician and social reformer, was from 1972 to 1977 Chief Minister of the state of Punjab and was elected in 1982 with the support of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for the seventh Indian President.

The background was that at the return of Indira Gandhi to power in 1980, the Sikhs in Punjab threatened to fall from the Indian Union. Therefore, Gandhi favored the politically expedient Giani Zail Singh.
