Kamanje

Kamanje is a municipality of the County of Karlovac in central Croatia.

Location

The village lies on the route of Karlovac on Ozalj direction Metlika close to the Slovenian border, which was built during the construction of the railway line before the First World War. The municipality has 891 inhabitants ( as of 2011). Arising from this is the reorganization of the Croatian communities in 2003.

History

Kamanje itself was founded in the 15th century. Over time, more and more farmers moved from the surrounding valleys there and so was a large settlement. The municipality consists of the villages today Brlog, Mali Vrh, Preseka, Orljakovo and Restovo.

The parish church of Sveta Marija is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and was built in 1889 on a hill in the middle of the village in the Gothic Revival style. It is a one-nave building with a narrow, polygonal sanctuary and a belfry on the main facade. The beautiful frescoes inside were mounted in 1895. For more than two centuries, is a recurring annual procession held in September, on the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, arriving to the pilgrims from Croatia and neighboring Slovenia.

Special

A special feature is the location on the outskirts of Kamanje cave Vrlovka, geomorphologic natural monument. This is very well known among researchers because it was used by indigenous people as a refuge already over 1000 years ago. During periods of heavy rain can admire the flowing water as small streams. The total length is about 400 m and almost completely (330 m) open to the tourists.
