Karel Halíř

Carl Halir ( born 1 February 1859 in Hohenelbe, † December 21, 1909 in Berlin, Karol, Karl or Karel and Cz: Halíř ) was a Bohemian violinist in classical music, conductor and music educator.

Life and work

Carl Halir studied for his school the first violin at the old Prague Conservatory with Anton Bennewitz and 1874-1876 in Berlin with Joseph Joachim, director of the University of the Arts Berlin. Then he was taken in the town of Chapel Legnica under Benjamin Bilse that occurred as a so -called " Bilse'sche Chapel " in both Berlin undertook concert tours of the most prestigious concert halls that time. Then Halir took several engagements as concertmaster, first in 1879 in Königsberg, then from 1881 in Mannheim, and finally from 1884 to 1894 at the Weimar court orchestra. 1887/88 he was naturalized in Thuringia.

In 1894 he followed then a call to Berlin, where he was taken to the Royal Court Opera, Berlin as concertmaster. On the initiative of Joseph Joachim way he also received a teaching position at the University of Arts in Berlin and was promoted to professor. During these years in Berlin specialized Halir, inter alia, the exercise of chamber music and was, from 1897, along with Joseph Joachim (violin), Emanuel Wirth ( viola ) and Robert Hausmann ( cello ) is a permanent member of the " Joachim Quartet " and the so-called " Schumann Halir - Dechert - Trio ", in which Georg Schumann ( piano) and Hugo Dechert (cello) were his companions. In addition, he founded yet even named after him " Halir Quartet ", where again Hugo Dechert and N. Müller ( viola ) and Gustav Exner (violin) and his partner were the Felix Weingartner his String Quartet No. 1 was dedicated.

In addition, he has been invited to numerous guest appearances. So Halir was, among other things, both on November 13, 1896 at his U.S. debut in New York City celebrated soloist with the Violin Concerto in D major op 61 by Ludwig van Beethoven with the New York Philharmonic under Anton Seidl and a few weeks later on December 4, 1896 at Carnegie Hall with the Violin Concerto No. 8, Op 47. in A Minor by Louis Spohr, together with the New York Symphony Orchestra under Walter Damrosch of Furthermore Halir was invited on 28 October 1899, the European premiere of the Violin Sonata Op 34 in A Minor by Amy Beach to take along with Teresa Carreño at the piano and on October 19, 1905 the solo part of the recasting of the Violin Concerto in D minor, Opus 47 by Jean Sibelius conducted by Richard Strauss. In the same year he also took over the solo part in the premiere of the divertissement for violin and orchestra by Charles Martin Loeffler with the Berlin Philharmonic in Berlin.

Carl Halir worked with only 50 years as a violinist and teacher until shortly before his sudden death in 1909, but as a composer he stepped rarely in evidence. Only a cadenza for the violin Koncert Op. 77 by Johannes Brahms is handed down. Among his more famous students included, among others, Paul of Klenau, Karl Krehahn, Adolf Huber and David the man, the husband of the pianist Clara man. Halir was married since 1888 with the singer Therese Zerbst ( 1859-1910 ). The couple had two children: Walter (1889-1920) and Eva Therese ( 1894-1992 ). His tomb is located in the cemetery Wilmersdorf.
