Karl Arnold (weightlifter)

Karl Arnold ( born October 28, 1940 in Dittelsdorf; † 28 February 2012) was a German weightlifter.

Career

Karl Arnold was next to Werner Dittrich Manfred Rieger and the third German weightlifter from Zittau, which was conducted in the 1960s by his coach Heinz Kahl in the top. He started for BSG Motor Zittau, Zittau and BSG Robur the SC Einhaeit Dresden. The trained smith who formed further to the physical education teacher, stood on the podium for the first time in 1959 an East German championship when he finished third in the middleweight division in the Olympic triathlon at the Junior 290 kg. Through diligent training he increased in the next few years his achievements by leaps and bounds and in 1962 the first East German champion in the middleweight division at 365 kg. Karl Arnold " cracked " soon the 400 -kg limit and even surpassed in 1969 the ominous 500 -kg limit. The biggest win of his career, he celebrated in 1969 at the Baltic Cup in Zinnowitz, where he succeeded in the middle heavyweight to beat newly-crowned Olympic champion from Mexico City Kaarlo Kangasniemi from Finland. Many international championships Karl Arnold reached in the years 1966-1972 top positions. At the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 but he was, strangely, not at the start, although he is an excellent 4th place in Constanta at the European Championships of the same year and had achieved this 525 kg, the best result of his career.

GDR Championships

Karl Arnold was GDR Champion in 1962 and 1963 at Middleweight, 1966, 1967 and 1968 in the light heavyweight and 1970 and 1972 the average heavyweight. To this end, he won from 1969 to 1972 for 5 East German Championships in the individual disciplines.
