Karl Reinhardt (philologist)

Karl Ludwig Reinhardt ( born February 14, 1886 in Detmold, † January 9, 1958 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German classical scholar.

Life and work

Karl Reinhardt grew up in Frankfurt am Main, where his father, the school reformer Karl Reinhardt, had been appointed in 1886 as Director of the Municipal Gymnasium. He attended founded in 1897 by the Frankfurt curriculum of his father Goethe-Gymnasium, a secondary school reform, whose leadership of the father held from 1897 to 1904.

Reinhardt was the grandson of the company founder Carl Johann Freudenberg of the Freudenberg Group.

In 1905 he began studying classical philology in Bonn, which he later continued in Berlin and graduated. In Berlin, he received his doctorate in 1910 with Ulrich von Wilamowitz - Moellendorff. He then worked at the universities of Bonn, Marburg and Hamburg, before being appointed in 1923 to the University of Frankfurt am Main. There he taught classics until his retirement in 1951, except for the years 1942-1945, which he spent at the University of Leipzig. Simultaneous to his appointment at Leipzig University, he was accepted as a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences. The Bavarian Academy of Sciences appointed him in 1937 as a corresponding member.

Reinhardt is considered one of the greatest Hellenist of his time. He has written numerous monographs and basic individual studies. His writings had a great influence on the thinking of both Ernst Cassirer, as well as Martin Heidegger.

1952 Reinhardt was inducted into the Order Pour le Mérite for Sciences and Arts, and in 1956 received an honorary doctorate from the University of Frankfurt. He died on January 9, 1958 in Frankfurt am Main.
