Kenneth Branagh

Sir Kenneth Charles Branagh [ bɾænə ] ( born December 10, 1960 in Belfast, Northern Ireland ) is a British actor and director. He was known primarily for his Shakespeare adaptations.

Life

Kenneth Branagh was born in Belfast, but moved at the age of nine with his family to Reading in England. At 19 he began an acting training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art Queen's University Belfast in 1990 awarded him an honorary doctorate in literature.

Branagh is involved in the theater as well as in the film business. Known as a director, he was especially with the filmic adaptation of several plays of William Shakespeare, beginning with Henry V (1989 ) on Much Ado About Nothing (1993 ), Othello ( 1995) up to Hamlet ( 1996). As an actor he appeared in many own films, but also in foreign productions, such as Gilderoy Lockhart in the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

In 2009, three remakes of Henning Mankell's Wallander were premiered with Branagh in the title role on German television. The presentation of the Swedish Kriminalkommissar 2009 brought him an Emmy nomination.

Five times he was nominated for an Oscar - one each for Best Actor, Supporting Actor, screenwriter, director and for best short film, which demonstrates his versatility as a filmmaker. He now holds the record for the most Oscar nominations in various categories. In 2001 he won an Emmy Award for the television game about the Wannsee Conference ( engl: Conspiracy ).

Several times he got together with his former wife Emma Thompson in front of the camera. They married in 1989 and were divorced again in 1996. Then Branagh had many years of a relationship with actress Helena Bonham Carter. In 2003 he married Lindsay Brunnock who has worked as Art Director.

In most films, Branagh is synchronized by Ulrich Matthes and Martin Umbach.

Honors and Awards

  • In June 2012, Branagh was defeated by Queen Elizabeth II knighted ( Knight Bachelor).
  • A little later he was on 27 July in important role in the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London; he played the leading part, by the program Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
  • 2014: Honorary President: German Shakespeare Society.
