The name comes from the Old Irish and is first occupied as Coemgen, medium irish Caoimhghin. The present form is in Irish Caoimhín ( [ kɰi ː v ʲ i ː n ʲ ] ). The known form Kevin is the anglicised version of the Irish name. The name means " beautiful and graceful of birth."
