Kokshetau

Kokshetau ( Kazakh Көкшетау - Blue Mountain; Russian Кокшетау / Kokshetau, formerly Кокчетав / Kokchetav ) is a city in Kazakhstan.

Geographical Location

Kokshetau is the capital of the territory Aqmola. It lies in the north of the country, about 300 km north- northwest of the capital Astana.

Population

The city has 133 561 inhabitants (2009 ).

History

Kokshetau was founded on April 29, 1824 and was granted town rights in 1895. In 1944 it became capital of the newly founded Kokchetav Oblast. In 1997, the city lost the function of the regional capital and was part Nordkasachstans until the field Aqmola struck in 1999 and the new administrative center was. The previous capital Aqmola was spun off from that same region and Astana as the new capital of Kazakhstan.

Landscape

The city is located in scenic surroundings with spas Burabai ( Borovoe ) Serenda or Schutschje and is therefore of some tourist importance.

Economy

The nearby Kokshetau massif is rich in various minerals. Among other things, a gold mine is operated there. Kokshetau is the seat of the agricultural undertaking Atameken -Agro.

Kokshetau endpoint is one of the largest power lines of the earth, powered with 1150 kV three-phase line Ekibastus - Kokshetau.

In 2002 Kokshetau briefly had a leaning tower, built in 1965 after the 180-meter high transmission tower of the city due to undermining its foundations tilted to one side. He was stabilized in the subsequent period by a permanent steel construction aid.

In the city the football club Oqschetpes Kokshetau and the Hockey Team HK Arlan Kokshetau are located.
