History

The place was first mentioned around the year 1130 as " Chungestein " which means as much as a royal castle. It was the seat of the Reich Minister of Alien Königstein, which were called in records in 1125 and extinct by 1250. 1393 took over Duke Stephan III. of Bavaria- Ingolstadt the place. In 1357 the village of Königstein was raised to market. Until 1623, Königstein was under the rule of the Lords of Breitenstein, whose tournament shield was awarded to the market by King Maximilian I Joseph in 1817 as market crest.

Incorporations

On April 1, 1971, until then independent municipality Gaißach was incorporated. 1 July 1972, parts of the territory were added to the dissolved municipalities Kürmreuth, Namsreuth and Sigras.

Königstein has two partners of the same cities: Königstein im Taunus near Frankfurt am Main and Königstein ( Saxon Switzerland ) in Dresden.

Monuments

In Königstein are the Evangelical St. George's Church and the Catholic St. Michael's Church.

Above the hamlet Breitenstein is the ruins Breitenstein from the 12th century with the well-preserved castle chapel, the only two-story Romanesque double chapel of the entire Upper Palatinate.

Nature

Königstein offers an extensive trail system, which leads to interesting rocks, caves and mountains. Near the village lies the mountain Ossinger that Maximiliansgrotte, the Bismarck grotto, the sundial, the Anton Voelkel Grotto and the width of Steiner farmer.

Others

One kilometer north of Königstein is the oldest so far discovered human habitation in the Upper Palatinate, called Kühloch ( cave cadastre Franconian Alb, cadastral number A 40 ). There cave bears lived more than 12,000 years ago. Here Residue from Eisfüchsen and also the mammoth want researchers have found. From the Stone Age people used the cave as a dwelling, stone drill from blue-gray flint, chert blades scratches and skeletal remains have survived. Even thousands of years later, the Kühloch still served as a shelter. There the farmers hid in the wars of their cattle. From this time the name comes Kühloch. Moreover, robbery and murder rabble used the cave as a refuge.
