History

A large part of today's municipal area was in the range of Hofmark Kastl of St. John and Malta, who de facto in 1806 was repealed. The northern parts of municipalities, the castle Lichtenegg, belonged to the Duchy of Sulzbach long time. The castle in the west of the municipality in the district of Lichtenegg was first mentioned 700 years ago, but is likely to be considerably older. Owner of the castle ruins is the church. The position of the ruined castle offers views to Middle Franconia, the Fichtelgebirge, the Bavarian Forest and the Upper Palatinate Forest. The Celts used in prehistoric times the place as a refuge castle. The first lords Sulzbacher Counts were called to 1050. Later Lichtenegg was the family seat of the Earls of Preysing. Christian Knorr von Rose Roth wrote on the way from Högen after Lichtenegg the hymn Morgenglanz eternity.
