Organization

In September 2011, the Kosovo Railways ( Alb. Hekurudhat e Kosovës; serb. Kosovske Železnice ) were divided into two companies: the Trainkos takes over since the passenger and freight traffic with the vehicles, while the Infrakos is responsible for the maintenance of railway infrastructure.

History

1873, the first railway line was built on the territory of present-day Kosovo. It led from Skopje to the south across Djeneral Janković and Kosovo Polje north to the city of Kosovska Mitrovica. It was built by the Compagnie des Chemins de fer Orientaux (CO), which was chaired by Maurice de Hirsch and stood under Ottoman sovereignty.

Between 1929 and 1991 the railway from the Jugoslovenske Železnice ( JŽ ) was operated when she went to the Serbian Railways (ZS ). After the Kosovo war in 1999 the ŽS formed from the nearby Kosovo shares the rail network the Hekurudhat e Kosovës ( HK) or Kosovske Železnice (KZ) out who started in 2001 their regular operation. Between 1999 and 2001, the use of the Kosovo Railways was free. 2011 changed its name to the HK Trainkos.

Rail network

Trainkos operates a railway network of 436.851 kilometers, of which 333.451 km for passenger and freight transport and 103.4 km only be used for the transport of goods in the country. The non-electrified network originally consisted of two intersecting in Fushë Kosova routes: on the one hand of Kraljevo in western Serbia on Kosovska Mitrovica and Fushë Kosova to Skopje running in Macedonia mainline, on the other, running east -west branch line from Niš in southern Serbia of the capital Pristina and Fushë Kosova into two branches after Peć and Prizren. Of these compounds today are the connection from Pristina on Fushë Kosova after Peć and Priština of about Fushë Kosova Han i Elezit (Macedonia) in operation. In northern Kosovo, the Serbian ŽS operates the connection Kraljevo - Zvečan. The remaining compounds are currently without rail transport. For years, there are plans to extend the section of Prizren to Albania in order to establish a connection to the network of Hekurudha Shqiptare. These plans are not yet progressed beyond declarations of intent.

Operation

Passenger

There are Freedom of Movement and Intercity distinguish the types of trains local train in passenger service. As rolling stock mostly Y1 double header or a di 3 with two former SJ- passenger car is used; Intercity usually consists of a former SJ- car of Trainkos and a Macedonian passenger cars.

Daily between Pristina and Peja / Peć operate two local train pairs, where a train composition in Peja / Peć stayed. Trains run on this route just under two hours.

Between Fushë Kosova and Hani i Elezit ( border with Macedonia ) run two Freedom of Movement train pairs and a local train pair. As the only international passenger train intercity train pair reversed (IC 891/892 ) from Pristina to Skopje on Fushë Kosova and back. Toward Fushë Kosova all trains stopping at all stations in the opposite direction all trains differently, only the evening local train stops everywhere. The trains need for the route Fushë Kosova - Hani i Elezit one and a half hours.

By March 2008, reversed two more Freedom of Movement train pairs of Fushë Kosova to Lesak (north of Leposavić ), but this traffic had to be set until further notice due to the tensions with Serbia.

Freight traffic

Of importance is the national freight serving multiple scattered over the whole country operations such as lime plants and others. The international freight traffic is handled via Hani i Elezit, the container terminal is located near the airport of Prishtina at the station Miradi.

The following is a partial list of the regular transport of goods:

  • Coal transports Obiliq - NewCoFerronikeli plant in Gllogoc. Transfer from the coal mine in Obiliq by working locomotive. Mostly every two days.
  • Alumina shipments from the mine Golesh ( southwest of the airport Prishtina ) for NewCoFerronikeli plant in Gllogoc. Mostly daily.
  • Various goods (containers, tanks, cargo) between Hani i Elezit go ( to / from Macedonia) and Miradi with operation of various sidings. Mostly daily.

Northern Kosovo

On March 3, 2008 ( three weeks after the declaration of independence of Kosovo), the Serbian railway company ŽS announced that it again the " control over their infrastructure in northern Kosovo " between the stations Lesak ( border station of Kosovo to Serbia) and Zvečan on after nine years Mitrovica took over. Once operational safety when the Serbian railway standards has been verified, the ŽS will take up the railway traffic on this route again. These are also 50 Serbian railway workers who had previously worked with the Kosovo Railways, are now taken over by the Serbian Railways. This had been a passenger train that ran between Fushë Kosova and Lešák stopped in Zvečan. The Serbian Railways had the UNMIK mission not informed at the time the notice of its decision.

Currently (2013 ) run twice daily DMUs Serbian series 711 of Kraljevo over Raška and the border station Lešák addition to Zvečan, the last station before Mitrovica and last place in predominantly Serb- inhabited Gebiet.Es find this section both passenger as well as exchange of goods with Serbia instead, is so transported, among other fuel without customs duty in Kosovo's government in Kosovo. The stations are staffed with Serbian staff, and the tickets are paid in dinars. The political tensions prevent any train service between Zvečan and Mitrovica; from Mitrovica the route is basically served by Trainkos again, but there are no regular passenger or freight to Obiliq ( freight trains ) or Fushë Kosova ( passenger trains ).

Vehicle material

The vehicles come from herds of the former Yugoslav Railways JŽ and imports from different European countries.

Locomotives

At locomotives are both former Yugoslav diesel locomotives of the series 661 of General Motors available as well as imported from Norway Nydqvist och Holm locomotives and a diesel-hydraulic locomotive Vossloh G 1700-2 BB series. Also at InnoTrans 2010 a modernized by the Croatian locomotive manufacturer Gradelj General Motors JT 38 CW - DC was presented.

While in freight transport all types of locomotives are used, only the NOHAB be used for passenger trains. These are all the passenger trains between Fushë Kosova and Hani i Elezit and in exceptional cases, passenger trains between Fushë Kosova and Peja / Peć in the normal case.

Railcar

Normally all traffic between Fushë Kosova and Peja / Peć is handled with Fiat -built, former SJ- railcar series Y1. Occasionally, also Y1 on the way to Hani i Elezit used. Next, built by Fiat former FS- railcar series ALn 668 are also present, but they are not currently needed and parked in Fushë Kosova.

Rolling stock

Presence is both rolling stock from the stock of the former JŽ as well as used vehicles from all over Europe. All locomotive-hauled trains are being driven with imported from Sweden Schnellzugwagen ( and in the case of the IC with a car of Macedonian Railways MZ).
