Kozan (Adana)

Kozan (formerly Sis, Armenian Սիս ) is a city of Adana Province in Turkey. It lies in the south of the Çukurova Anti- Taurus on the left bank of the Kirkgen Su, one side of the river Ceyhan.

History

The Assyrian name of the city is Sissu. She was subjected to 676 BC by Ashur ahhe - iddina.

The ancient name of the city is Sísion or Flaviopolis.

In the 9th century Flaviopolis fell to the Abbasids and was fixed by the caliph al - Mutawakkil. After another period of Byzantine rule the city came under the rule of the Seljuks. In 1187 it was under the name Sis capital of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, from 1294 the seat of the Catholicos of the Armenians. On a paved terrace below the castle royal palace and cathedral were built. In one of King Leo I built church was located until the early 20th century, the throne of the kings of Lesser Armenia.

In 1375 the city was conquered by the Mamluks, but remained until the early 20th century became the center of the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia, which was in competition at the 1441 newly founded ostarmenischen Catholicos in Echmiadzin and still exists today. After the First World War, the headquarters were moved for security reasons after Antelias in Lebanon.

Armenian synods of Sis

Synods of the Armenian Church were held in Sis in the years 1204, 1243, 1251, 1307, 1342 and 1361. 1251 a council was held at Sis, in the emissary of Pope Innocent IV, the Armenians should convince you that the Holy Spirit from the Father and the Son go out ( " Filioque "). Attractions

The Hoskadem mosque was built by the Mamluks in 1448 and is a typical example of Mamluk architecture and traditions. The castle of Sis another attraction. Cathedral, churches and monasteries of the Armenian Catholicosate are almost completely gone.
