Kravany, Poprad District

Kravany (up to 1948 Slovak " Kraviany "; shelving German, Hungarian Erzsébetháza - to 1907 Kravján ) is a town in eastern Slovakia, with a population of 885 (as at 31 December 2011). It belongs to Okres Poprad, which is a part of the overall district Prešov Region.

Geography

The municipality is located in the upper valley of the Hornád, between the mountain range Kozie chrbty in the north and the Low Tatras in the south. Kravany is located 13 kilometers from Poprad.

History

The town was first mentioned in 1317 as Villa Michaelis and belonged to the estate of the monastery in the near Spišský Štiavnik. Since the end of the 18th century it belonged to the diocese of Spis. In 1828 the town had 92 houses and 666 inhabitants. The main source of income was agriculture and Fuhrwesen.
