Kristina Kanders

Kristina Kander (born 1962 in Cologne) is a German drummer, percussionist, songwriter and singer.

Life

Kander grew up in a musical family; she is a daughter of singer Agnes Giebel, her father was a classical pianist. She took piano lessons and the basis of voice training, before she turned to after graduation the drums. 1985 arose from a African dance class, which she accompanied with percussion, the first Samba Band in Cologne, which also occurred at the carnival parades. 1987 Kander went to New York to study music (1992 Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Music, Jazz & Contemporary Music Program, New School University, 1997 Master of Arts Degree in Music, Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College). She studied with Ron Carter, Kenwood Dennard, Jojo Mayer, Bernard Purdie, Kenny Werner and Jim Hall.

From 1994 to 2005 taught Kander ear training, drums and percussion at the Jazz & Contemporary Music Program at New School University. From 1999 to 2005 she also worked as Acting Director of Academic Affairs for the Jazz & Contemporary Music Program.

From New York Kander stepped 1987-2005 at many concerts, festivals and radio broadcasts in the U.S. and Europe, including with Cyro Baptista's Beat the Donkey (Big Bang Percussion Festival (including Carre / Amsterdam, Phillipszaal / Maastricht, Vredenburg / Den Hague, Vooruit / Gent Jazz Festival Willisau, Switzerland; Guimaraes Jazz Festival, Culturgest, Lisbon, Portugal; were added New York appearances with Baptista at the Guggenheim Museum, NY Stock Exchange, Bowery Ballroom, Tonic, Brooklyn Museum, Central Park / Summerstage, . Since 2005, Kander has been living in Cologne and teaches privately drums and percussion. 2006 to 2009 she played drums regularly for Frank Köllges Adam Noidlt Missiles orchestra. Since 2007, she produced her own music. In 2008 she published her solo debut album "For All People." In January 2010, she released her second CD, Say Something.
