Kyathos

As Kyathos (Greek κύαθος, latin Cyathus, plural Kyathoi, German: cup) is a vessel, or referred to a tool that was used especially in Greek antiquity, but also beyond.

First, the Kyathos was a metal-made long-handled ladle. The name was also used on crafted from clay cups that had a long handle. This form of Kyathos was used as a ladle for scooping the wine from the mixing vessels in the Servierkannen. In addition to the raised loop handles a thorn at the tip of the handle is characteristic on which the person adding their thumbs could be stored for a better grip of the vessel. The ceramic Kyathoi characterized by their thinness and often also by their painting. It is almost certain that the ceramic mold is oriented to the metal models. Probably the mold was taken from Etruria and produced primarily for export. Especially profiled for the production of Kyathoi for the Etruscan market was the famous potter Nikosthenes, the Attic and Etruscan currents could also join. From Greek and Etruscan works are probably the Kyathoi the Daunian production were affected.

The name of the Kyathos is certainly causally related to the designation of the hollow measure Kyathos.
