Typology of Greek vase shapes

The list of forms, types and variations of the ancient Greek fine and utilitarian pottery arranges the different shapes, types and variants of the pottery of ancient Greece. No distinction is made between fine and coarse pottery, but dispenses with ceramic products such as terracottas ( sculptures, architectural ceramics, Tanagra figurines, etc.).

A distinction is made in the ancient ceramics in the research for vessel form and decoration. Most changes go hand in hand in decorating and ceramic mold. There are several different, partly overlapping types of typology. A subdivision is possible For example, the Form subheading in amphorae, jugs, hydria, craters and boiler, drinking vessels and oil and ointment vessels. Another possibility is the order after use in storage vessels, mixing vessels, scooping and pouring vessels, cult vessels, drinking vessels, Salb and other vessels. Further subdivision is done in closed and open forms.

First, in a first list the basic forms of Greek ceramics are shown. This is followed by several lists in which types and variants of some forms are shown, which were particularly varied or where specialized types had emerged.

For the Geometric and Orientalizing period is an attempt to provide a representative cross-section of the various forms and local styles. Especially for the Attic art of the archaic and classical period, the time of the black-figure and red-figure style, there is a fine-grained typology, which is given as accurately as possible again.
