Mastos

Mastos (plural: Mastoi; μαστός ancient Greek ) is a drinking vessel of Greek antiquity.

The Mastos shape has been developed in Corinth, from where it was taken over by Attic potters. Especially in the Athens of the late Archaic period, it was a popular form of drinking vessel. Get Attic are just a few examples, all of which date from the second half of the 6th century BC. Red-Figure Mastoi are very rare. They have the form of a female breast with a nipple in the center, from which derives its name. Most have Mastoi a vertical and a horizontal, sometimes two vertical handles. The vessels are on average about 15 inches high. Images on Mastoi usually follow simple decoration schemes. According to the form of the black- Mastos Painter was named. On a vase painting of the KX Painter a Mastos is shown hanging on the wall. A closely related form is the mastoid.
