L' amico Fritz is an opera in three acts by Pietro Mascagni. The libretto was written by Nicola Daspuro mainly based on the novel L'ami Fritz by the writers Erckmann - Chatrian. The premiere took place on 31 October 1891 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. The Germany premiere took place on January 16, 1892 held in Hamburg and was conducted by Gustav Mahler. The most famous scene of the opera is the duetto delle ciliegie ( Suzel buon dì ), the cherry duet in the second act

Action

The approximately 90-minute opera is the end of the 19th century, probably in Alsace in eastern France, and revolves around the themes of relationships and society.

During birthday of Fritz, a wealthy bachelor and landowners, congratulates his friend David, who prophesied, Fritz would have an bachelor existence weary. Fritz denies this, and finally it creates a bet: In the event that Fritz actually should marry again, he must cede David for his vineyard as a bet. Later, David discovered that Suzel, the daughter of a farmer of Fritz, has fallen in love with. Then he would make Fritz jealous and told this by an upcoming wedding Suzels.
