La Martyre

La Martyrdom ( Breton Ar Merzher - Salaun ) is a commune with 764 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the west of Brittany in the département of Finistère.

Geography

The site is located approximately 22 kilometers (km) south of the Atlantic Ocean coast at the entrance of the English Channel. The major city and port of Brest and Paris is 25 kilometers west about 480 km to the east (in straight line ).

Borders the following municipalities: La Roche -Maurice, Ploudiry, Le Tréhou, Tréflévénez, Saint -Urbain and Pencran.

History

The name of the place to go back to an event that should have taken place on 25 June 874: The Breton prince Solomon is said to have sought in the church of the village on the run from his son-in shelter and have been murdered there. He is revered as a martyr, which is said to have given the place its name. The church has him as a saint - Saint -Salomon.

Infrastructure

In Landerneau Landivisiau and there is the next departures of the highway E 50 towards Rennes and Daoulas one on the E 60 direction Nantes.

The train station of Brest is the end of TGV Atlantique to Paris and Landerneau hold regional trains towards Morlaix / Rennes and Quimper / Nantes.

Near the city of Brest in Guipavas is the regional airport Aéroport de Brest Bretagne.

Attractions

The enclosed parish of La Martyrdom from the 16th and 17th century is classified as a monument historique. The Calvary is here not off as a separate group, but is above the portal, arranged around the balustrade. Good condition is also the high threshold of the secondary entrance, who was different than the main door always open. The high threshold should prevent about scattering pigs ravaged the cemetery.

In the Church of Saint -Salomon four stained glass windows are from the 16th century. Added to the church is an ossuary.
