La Roche-en-Ardenne

La Roche -en- Ardenne ( German rock in the Ardennes ) is a Walloon -Belgian municipality in the district of Marche- en- Famennian province of Luxembourg.

Geography

La Roche -en- Ardenne is located in the eastern Ardennes, on the headwaters of the river Ourthe.

The geographical coordinates are 50 ° 11 'N and 5 ° 35' east, the altitude about 350 meters ( from map estimated).

The castle ruin is one of the tourist attractions of the place and he is also the Ausgangangspunkt for climbing the highest summit Ardennes Baraque de Fraiture ( 652 m) and for kayaking on the Ourthe.

History

The castle dominating the town was first a residence in the Neolithic period, then a fortified city, and later a Roman fort and finally the Roman feudal castle of the Frankish kings.

During the Battle of the Bulge the German Wehrmacht in December 1944 and January 1945, a large part of the town was destroyed.

On January 1, 2005 La Roche -en- Ardenne counted 4,201 residents. The total area of the municipality is 147.52 km ², which corresponds to a population density of 28,67 inhabitants per km ².
