Latrobe, Tasmania

Latrobe is a city in the north of the Australian state of Tasmania, located on the Mersey River. The town is located 11 km southeast of Devonport on the Bass Highway.

History

The area was first settled by BB Thomas in 1826 and 1861 was the naming of the settlement after Charles La Trobe ( 1801-1875 ), a Lieutenant Governor of Victoria and Tasmania. Latrobe at that time had a river crossing. From this period a number of standing listed building on Gilbert Street are obtained. The town lost its importance when the railway between Devonport and Launceston was built.

The Latrobe City were annexed in recent times more small towns like Port Sorell, Shearwater, Hawley, Wesley Vale, Sassafras, Moriarty and Tarlet, bringing the population increased to about 8,000 people.

Culture and sights

In Latrobe various festivals, of which the wood chipper competition is particularly known nationwide. The most important wood chippers are honored in the Axeman 's Hall of Fame in place. Also located in the town of a Courthouse Museum and a producer of cherry jam and cherry liqueur.
