Leonid Volkov

Leonid Ivanovich Volkov (Russian Леонид Иванович Волков; born December 9, 1934 in Gorky, Russian SFSR ) is a former Soviet- Russian ice hockey player who was active for many years for CSKA Moscow and Torpedo Gorky in the Klass A, while six times Soviet Champion been. With the Soviet national team, he won the gold medal at the Olympic Winter Games 1964.

Career

Beginnings in Gorki

Leonid Wolokow played as a child and teenager in backyards and frozen water surfaces hockey before he played from 1949 for the works team of the Gorkowski Awtomobilny Zavod. In 1951, he was inducted into the team Torpedo Gorky. where he quickly established and matured into a leading player.

Success with CSKA Moscow

Due to the shown benefits torpedo he quickly came into the focus of the ZSK MO Moscow, but the Gorkier responsible resisted initially successful against a delegation of the central Wolow Sports Club of the Army. In all, he scored 145 goals in 250 games in the Klass A, before 1965 moved to SKA MWO Kalinin in the second-class Klass B, where in 1967 ended his career. Parallel to the sport of ice hockey had studied pedagogy in Moscow and taught by end of his career at a military academy Volkov.

Internationally

While Leonid Volkov played for Torpedo Gorky, he received no invitation to the national team. It was only when he moved to CSKA Moscow in 1957, he became the focus of the coach. However, as these were under the compulsion alongside players of CSKA also one row of the other two capital clubs - Dynamo and Spartak - use, Volkov had to wait long for his international debut.

On 13 December 1963 he was in a friendly against Sweden for the first time for the Soviet national team on the ice, but managed initially not in the squad for the Olympic Winter Games in 1964 in Innsbruck. However, when Vladimir Jursinow Dynamo Moscow failed because of appendicitis, Leonid Volkov replaced its namesake Yuri Volkov, who usually played in a row with Jursinow. At the tournament itself achieved Leonid Volkov, the third forward line of the Soviets formed with Anatoli Firsov and Viktor Yakushev, 6 goals and 4 assists and won with the Sbornaja the Olympic gold medal.

A year later, he took with the USSR selection at the 1965 World Cup, where he scored 4 goals in 6 games and won the gold medal. The last major round match of the World Cup against Canada on March 14, 1965, also his last international match. For the national team, he scored a total of 15 goals in 31 internationals.

In 1965 he was awarded the Honored Master of Sports.
