Leonidas Pyrgos

Leonidas "Leon" Pyrgos (Greek Λεωνίδας Πύργος, * 1874 in Mandinia, Greece, † after 1896 ) was a Greek fencer. He was the first Greek Olympic champion of the modern age.

Pyrgos won the gold medal in the foil competition of the fencing master, in which only two athletes had competed at the Olympic Games in Athens, I.. His challenger, the Frenchman Joanni Perronet was considered one of the best fencers in the world. After an exciting battle Pyrgos won 3-1.

It is reported that viewers Pyrgos frenetically celebrated and carried him on their shoulders through the streets of Athens.
