Ligny-en-Barrois

Ligny -en- Barrois is a commune with 4205 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Meuse in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district of Bar-le -Duc and is the capital of the canton of Ligny -en- Barrois. The inhabitants are called Linéens.

Geography

Ligny -en- Barrois is located on Ornain, about 45 kilometers west of Toul. Parallel to Ornain runs the Marne au Rhin Canal de la ( dt: Marne-Rhine Channel ), which allows taking advantage of the additional channels a navigable route from the Paris region to the Rhine.

History

Ligny 962 was first mentioned in documents as Lineium. The city developed from the 11th or 12th century around a castle around which stood near the tour Valeran.

Ligny -en- Barrois was the capital of a rule and later county, which belonged successively to the Counts of Champagne, Count of Bar, and then a branch of the Counts of Luxembourg, with the Johann even occupied the Mainzer Erzstuhl from 1371.
