This (incomplete ) List of fountains in Rome represents a selection of the largest, most prestigious and most important fountains in Rome

General

The number of fountains in Rome is in the thousands. Just to the 2500 so-called Nasoni are scattered all over the city - small iron drinking fountain with curved nose-shaped flowing lines, from which runs day and night water.

History of fountains in Rome

Some of these wells are the end point of one of the eleven major aqueducts that once supplied ancient Rome with water. See Water supply in the Roman Empire.   • Ancient origin are the two fountains on the Piazza Farnese. The two stone sinks are from the Baths of Caracalla.

  • The Naiads Fountain in Piazza della Repubblica was built in 1901 by Mario Rutelli.
  • The Turtle Fountain (Fontana delle tartarughe ) was built in 1581-1584, designed by Giacomo della Porta. It was not until 1658 the turtles were added.
  • The Trevi Fountain ( Fontana di Trevi) is the end point of the ancient aqueduct Aqua Virgo. In his late baroque form it was built according to plans by Nicola Salvi 1732-1762.
  • The Triton Fountain in the Piazza Barberini is a work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini from the year 1642.
  • The Four wells (Le Quattro Fontane ) is a baroque marble fountain of four individual wells ( Tiber, Juno, Diana and Arno fountain ) at the corners of the intersection of Via Quirinale and Via delle Quattro Fontane on the apex of the Quirinalshügels.
  • The Four Rivers Fountain ( Fontana dei Quattro Rivers ) was created in 1651 by Bernini in the center of Piazza Navona. He wears an obelisk and represents the four continents then known by their great rivers: the Danube for Europe, the Nile in Africa, Ganges for Asia and the Río de la Plata for America. In Lyon is a very similar fountain by Bernini. More fountain in the Piazza Navona, the Fontana del Moro and the Fountain of Neptune.
