List of longest rivers of Mexico

The following table includes 26 Mexican rivers with a length of more than 250 kilometers. In the first three rivers is important to note that they originate in the territory of other countries (USA, Guatemala ) and partly border rivers are; its estuary is located, however, on the territory of Mexico. Conversely, there is not a single river which originates in Mexico, but ends in another state.

Basically it is established that the rivers in southern Mexico, although not very long, but lead because of the relatively high rainfall in the Petén and in the Mexican states of Chiapas, Veracruz and Tabasco significant amounts of water. The rivers in northern Mexico, however, are relatively long, but run them due to the prevailing drought in the states of Sonora, Chihuahua, Zacatecas, Coahuila, Querétaro, Michoacán, Durango, Nayarit, Guanajuato, Jalisco and Sinaloa only in the winter rainy season; in the rainless months, they often dry out completely. The abstraction of water for agricultural purposes contributes to the drying up of rivers in northern Mexico. On the elongated Baja California ( Baja California) there is no single natural watercourse for the little rain water seeps immediately and runs above ground quickly.

A different kind of situation is found in the Yucatan peninsula - there are indeed sufficient rain, but this disappears immediately in the cracked limestone soil and collects only above clay and clay in approximately 15 to 30 meters depth. There are several underground river systems of partly considerable dimensions, but no surface water streams. The subterranean watercourses Yucatán about the revered by the Maya as sacred cenotes accessible ( see also Balancanche ).

A problem with many rivers in Mexico is the constant and uncontrolled discharge of agricultural, industrial or human waste water ( aguas negras ). In addition to the place everywhere plastic waste.
