Live at Watkins Glen

Occupation

Live at Watkins Glen is a live album by Canadian folk and country - rock group The Band, released on 4 April 1995 on Capitol Records. Capitol released the album as a live document of the performance of the group at the Summer Jam at Watkins Glen on July 28, 1973 a rock music festival where the Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers Band played.

However, the reality is somewhat different. Probably very few of the recordings on the album actually comes from Watkins Glen Festival. It has been proven that the band did not play some of the songs presented at the festival. In addition, the sound of electric bass and snare drum easily change between tracks. With probability bordering on certainty the songs on the album actually comes from three different sources:

Of all the songs on the album come only Too Wet to Work and Jam actually from Watkins Glen Festival. Back to Memphis and Endless Highway fall into the second group and are included without the applause as bonus tracks on the CD version of Moondog Matinee. The rest of the songs comes from the 1971 recordings at the Academy of Music in New York City.

Live at Watkins Glen was a great success, neither critics nor the audience. The album was also criticized that it is not a regular concert recording and the title is therefore misleading. In addition, most of the songs already on the CD versions of Moondog Matinee and Rock of Ages, or the boxset Across the Great Divide has been included, which made the purchase of the CD even for hardcore fans unnecessarily. General shall Rock of Ages and The Last Waltz as a better live albums the group in its original cast.
