Local council (Israel)

A municipality, Hebrew Mo'atzot Mekomiyot, מועצה מקומית, Eng. local council, hence local association, is an administrative unit for the smaller urban settlements and the larger agricultural villages.

A local government has generally 2000-20000 inhabitants and is therefore in the administrative divisions of Israel between the municipalities and the rural regional administrations.

The decision-making authority as to whether a settlement is charged to a municipality, lies with the Israeli Ministry of Interior. The Minister should listen to the inhabitants of the village in question, after the criteria are met for an amendment to the Statute.

In 2007 there were a total of 141 municipalities in Israel.
