Description

Vegetative characteristics

Lomatogonium species grow as annuals or perennial herbaceous plants. Some species form rhizomes as outlasting. Every few lateral roots either go from one main root, or they are fleshy and are formed on the rhizomes. The prostrate, ascending to erect stems are branched to unbranched and have stripes or edges. The decussate leaves are simple.

Generative features

The flowers are borne terminally singly or usually in a terminal or pendent zymösen inflorescences. The flower stalk is usually longer than the flower. The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and usually five, rarely four or zehnzählig. The usually five sepals are fused at least at their base. The most five white, pale - blue to blue, clear two-tone petals are fused at least at their base. Each petal has two ciliated nectary at its base. It's just a circle with usually five (rarely four or ten) stamens present. The slightly flattened stamens are attached to the base of the corolla tube and do not tangle spiral. The mostly blue, rarely yellow anthers are most as long as the stamens. The ovary are sword-shaped, cylindrical or ovoid - ellipsoid. It is not a pen available. In the seated scars the stigma lobes run down the ovary seams.

The bivalved capsule fruits contain many seeds. The seed coat is almost smooth.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Lomatogonium 1830 was established by Addison Brown in Flora, 13, pp. 221. Synonyms for Lomatogonium A.Br. are: Pleurogyne Eschscholtz ex Chamisso & Schlechtendal, Swertia subgen. Lomatogonium ( A.Braun ) Satake, Pleurogynella Ikonnikov. The genus belongs to the subtribe Lomatogonium Swertiinae from the tribe Gentianeae within the family Gentianaceae.

The genus name is derived Lomatogonium from the Greek words loma, lomatos for hem and gonia for a corner, and refers to the run-down on the ovary scars. Even the German trivial name Saumnarbe refers to this feature.

The Holarctic distribution area includes North America and temperate Eurasia. The center of biodiversity with 16 species in China. Only two species occur in Europe. The only Central European representative is the Tauern Carinthia floret ( Lomatogonium carinthiacum ).
